Niche Web for Mobile (M) has finally arrived


As Peter in development has put it “I’M excited” with big MMMM for mobile, it has been a long time coming and yes it is here. Niche Mobile is a companion website designed specifically for the mobile platform and smaller screen sizes.

We recently discussed in a previous article about responsive design and tried to develop this in Niche Web. After some serious hair pulling from the developers it was found that developing the site to work across all devices did not allow us to give the user experience we desired on smaller devices.

It was then we decided to develop the mobile site specifically for the smaller handhelds. This allowed us to fine tune exactly what we wanted the customer to see and how they would see it. It also gave the client the option to decide what content from their own website they wish to include in the mobile version.

Wheels and Dollbaby have kindly accepted to be our first client for Niche Web mobile. You can see the site working on your mobile device by going to – you should be redirected straight to the mobile site – An option to go back and forth to the main site is also provided for mobile users.

Niche Mobile has only been developed for retail. Adding wholesale to the mobile and working with the colour size matrix on a mobile device did not operate quite successfully

so we have left this development for the moment.

Hurray for Net-a-Porter!


Aussie shopper’s favourite Luxury designer brand website, Net-a-Porter have finally moved into the Australian and Asian market.

It’s new addition, a dedicated distribution centre based in Hongkong sets out to streamline its ties throughout Asia, Australia and New Zealand.

The new move promises express delivery timing and more cost-effective shipping prices to Hongkong, Australia, China, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, New Zealand, India, Indonesia, Philippines, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam.

Customers will also have the option to shop in their preferred currency including Hongkong dollars, Australian dollars and U.S dollars.

Net-a-porter’s managing director Alison Loehnis has said the move is the start of a new larger global strategy – “there’s much more in the pipeline and our plans include the integration of additional payment gateways for customers in China as well as a same day delivery service in Hongkong and next day shipping service to major cities in Australia and China.

Expanding to Asia Net-a-Porter are also offering a translation service for the majority of its region specific websites including Mandarin, French and German allowing users to browse the website in their own language. Net-a-Porter will also offer a Mandarin, Cantonese, French and German customer care team.

Net-a-Porter currently was launched in June 2000 they currently stock over 350 designer brands and offer express worldwide shipping to 170 countries.

Marnies move


Marnie Skillings has packed up shop on Glenmore road and made the move to fashion giant, Ladakh.

Marnie closed the doors to her own label and flagship store last year marking an end to her 12 year career in luxury womenswear. Marnie is now leading the design team at Ladakh as head creative and designer. Skillings fans can keep up to date with her latest moves via ladakh’s soon to be relaunched website, e-commerce store and social media pages. Marnie’s latest designs have already hit store floors with a fresh new look set to sway the brands creative direction. Following Marnie’s takeover, so far we see her personal touches throughout Ladakh’s website, in Hongkong on a design trip, her own son modelling the latest styles and her two-toned on trend manicures. Taking Ladakh in a new direction, the 21 year old business is set to soar over the coming years with the brand stocked nationally and showrooms in New York and Los Angeles.

Niche News


The biggest and most significant change is in Niche Web and Responsive design.

As per Wikipedia : Responsive web design (RWD) is a web design approach aimed at crafting sites to provide an optimal viewing experience—easy reading and navigation with a minimum of resizing, panning, and scrolling—across a wide range of devices (from desktop computer monitors to mobile phones.

The number of devices has grown exponentially in the last 18 months, it is no point referring to desktop, smart phone or even tablet as this does not cover the many number actually on the market. Even I have to admit the number of devices on the market today is mind-blowing.

Moving to a responsive design means a complete rethink in how things work, however when Niche Web was originally designed we did have smaller devices in mind, this has helped us to design for this responsive environment. When the environment changes ie from wide to narrow, elements of the website need to move around, disappear or format differently. Our designer has been methodically going through all pages retail and wholesale working out how the site will work across not just any device but also browsers.

Importance of having a good IT company


An incident occurred the other day when a client had a problem with their data file. It required that we revert to a backup. The client did 2 backups each day one in the evening and another snapshot at lunch. It was relatively painless and the client lost about 3 hours work. Now 3 hours is still a long time but it is better than 8 hours or worse not having one at all. This is where the real value of an IT company is, or better still the prevention of loss. How much would it cost your company if you are down for 1 hour, 3 hours, 8 hours or even perhaps a week. Sometimes we tend to skip these services but can your company really afford not to.

Ask yourself:

Do we have a proper service contract in place for the management of our IT?

When was the last time we checked our backups, or have actually done a restore?

If my building burnt down today could we be up and running again the next day with critical systems?
